Food safety news round-up: KFC fined for breach of COVID-19 regulations

Fines have been handed out to two takeaways in Oxford and one in Rugby, for failing to adhere to the 10pm coronavirus restrictions

Two fast food restaurants in Oxford have been fined £1,000 for breaking coronavirus law. KFC and nearby Bodrum Kebab, in Cowley Road, were found to be serving customers after the 10pm curfew. The fines were issued by Oxford City Council, following complaints from the public.

The current law allows businesses to operate a service, click-and-collect or drive-thru after 10pm, but forbids them from taking orders and serving food in their premises or at their door after that time.

Fines of up to £10,000 can be issues for a breach of the rules, but the council opted for a smaller fine as it was the first offence for both restaurants.

Takeaway owner fined £100 for not wearing a mask

Elsewhere, a takeaway in Rugby has been issued with a £1,000 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) after breaching coronavirus restrictions.

The takeaway, which Rugby Borough Council has not named, was visited by police and environmental health officers after receiving reports customers were inside after 10pm waiting to be served.

Warwickshire Police also fined the owner a £100 FPN for failing to wear a face covering.
