Technology in construction

‘Virtual construction site’ technology aims to improve safety

Luminous Group teams up with Aarsleff Ground Engineering to develop a VR room which allows clients to virtually visit construction sites pre-build.

Luminous VR Construction SiteA state-of-the-art virtual reality room has been developed by Luminous to develop and enhance the knowledge and skills of estimators and engineers and assist with safer project proposals.

As well as this, it’s hoped the technology will be able to be expanded to incorporate safety training and allow workers more information on how to work near and operate machinery in a safer manner by allowing staff to visit project sites, observe site access points and see the surrounding environment before setting foot on site.

Managing Director of Aarsleff Kevin Hague said: “In embracing VR, we also hope to tackle the challenge that ‘young people are not interested in construction’ by rolling out the virtual application at careers fairs and university shows.

“Students and aspiring engineers will be able to walk around on an Aarsleff site, helping them to understand several ground engineering disciplines and learn about the machinery operated on site – all whilst in a safe and engaging way”

Marketing and Communications Manager Jessica Banham added: “The possibilities of VR are endless, and it’s really important that we engage with it now.

“We’re utilising the technology internally first to bring a new dimension into our estimating process, however we envisage the technology being used for company marketing, health and safety inductions, site training and other applications in the near future.”

“We’re just at the beginning of our journey with Aarsleff and it’s great that they’ve already identified so many potential areas that our technology can aid them with. VR really is the future of several industries and I have no doubt there is much more we can do with VR and AR technology,” concluded Luminous Group Founder Ben Bennett.
