In court

Council will be prosecuted over pupil’s death

The HSE has informed Bridgend County Borough Council that it will be prosecuted following the death of Ashley Daniel Talbot, a pupil at Maesteg Comprehensive School.

Ashley, a 15 year old pupil at the school, was involved in a collision with a minibus on the school grounds on 10 December 2014. He suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bridgend County Borough Council will appear in court at a date to be confirmed, to face a charge under Section 3 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced.

‘Co-operated fully’

The council said it had “cooperated fully” throughout the HSE investigation and “will continue to do so”.

A spokesman added: “In the meantime, our thoughts remain with Ashley’s family, friends and anyone who may have been affected by this tragic accident.”

Ashley suffered multiple injuries in the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest into his death found he was killed accidentally.

Concerns were raised about safety at the school before the crash, with a regular bus driver telling the inquest it was an “accident waiting to happen”.
