SHP announce its Trailblazer of 2023
SHP is pleased to announce Marcin Nazaruk as winner of its Trailblazer award for 2023.
Marcin Nazaruk at Learning from Normal Work has been announced as this year’s SHP Trailblazer of 2023, part of the wider SHP Awards, which is in association with HSE Recruitment Network.
The former Safety Culture Advisor at BP uses scientific insights to ultimately help companies find the causes of accidents before they happen. He specifically works within HoP and Safety II as his frameworks and has assisted numerous organistions to negate future incidents. It was this field of work, backed up by strong evidence and case studies that impressed the panel of judges.
Anything but normal
He has produced an array of industry guides on the topic for the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, the Energy Institute and the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and continues to mentor thousands of safety professionals on the implementation of LFNW. Most importantly, he has produced robust research to validate its effectiveness.
Definitely trailblazing
The judges were impressed by Nazaruk’s efforts to challenge traditional safety thinking and evidence of his work through case studies. One commented: “This is definitely innovation; this is definitely trailblazing for others to follow.”
Humbled
Commenting on the accolade, Nuzaruk said: “I am humbled to be the recipient of the SHP Trailblazer Award. I’m delighted to see that the HSE community represented by the judging panel considered Learning from Normal Work worthy of such a prestigious recognition and I look forward to seeing more companies adopting proactive learning as part of their safety journey.”
Highly commended
The judges were also keen to acknowledge and highly commend the nomination of Shonagh Methven (pictured), who has worked extremely hard to revise the evacuation plans at social care provider United Response, where she is head of health and safety. The new policy, Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs), recognises those with learning disabilities who may refuse to leave even in an emergency.
The policy involves identifying an object of reference; something that the person cares about: it could be an item or a person that they are more likely to want to save and bring with them. This phrase of reference is spoken by staff, or sometimes recorded by a parent, family member, or friend, and is a prompt to evacuate.
The phrase is employed in everyday use to cement it as a prompt to action by the person, to leave their house or their bedroom. Familiarity with the object or phrase of reference, built up over months and years, increases the likelihood that it will work when it must, in an emergency situation.
The judges were impressed by this innovation, particularly post-Grenfell and Methven’s clear motivation to help those who need it most.
