Gas safety: Capita set to continue running Gas Safe Register

The outsourcing giant Capita looks set to continue to operate the Gas Safe Register on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for another five years.

The HSE has announced the firm is the preferred bidder to run the register for another five years, from April 2019 when its current agreement with Capita runs out to March 2024.

A division of the outsourcing firm, Capita Gas Registration and Ancillary Services (CGRAS), has managed the service since it replaced CORGI in 2009.

The Gas Safe Register is the only official list of domestic gas engineers in the UK who are competent and can work legally on gas appliances and installations.

Anyone working on a gas appliance without being registered is doing so illegally and could be prosecuted.

“During the procurement process we received several strong bids and we are pleased with the interest the tender opportunity generated,” said the HSE’s Director of Regulation, Philip White.

“The bid from Capita / CGRAS was the strongest on cost and quality and we are confident they will continue to raise the standards of gas safety and provide a gas safe home for everyone.”
Around 132,000 engineers and 75,000 businesses are currently registered.

The contract award is now subject to a statutory 10-day standstill period in which other companies can contest the decision.

“We will continue to employ a thorough governance process, including key performance indicators and service level agreements with potential financial penalties to manage the contract closely to ensure services are delivered in a cost-effective manner and the needs of gas engineers and consumers are met,” added Mr White.
