Asbestos left in skip and ‘forgotten’ about for five days
Staff allowed back onto school site after asbestos was disturbed as incident had failed to be reported.
Up to 25 staff were allowed access to a school in Aberdeen for five days after asbestos was disturbed.
The incident happened on July 12 during maintenance work at Bridge of Don Academy in Aberdeen.
An investigation by the council found that there was no emergency response because a line manager ‘forgot’.
The asbestos had been left in a skip.
Safety failings
The report went on to reveal a series of safety failures took place before and after the incident.
The site was “not safe” as the area had “not been correctly decontaminated and isolated to prevent access by other users of the building”, it added.
At the time of the disturbance, a worker was attempting to remove plasterboard facing and infill panelling above fire doors.
However, the panel was unstable and broke apart.
Concerns were raised about the possibility of asbestos contained within the materials. However, teachers, janitors, cleaners and other workers were allowed access to the building over the next week.
Following a clean-up operation, it was confirmed that brown asbestos was contained within an insulating board.
The report concluded by criticising the panning of the project. It said that “no level of urgency indicated throughout the incident”.
