Worker breaks back in fall during poorly planned job

Two companies have admitted failing to properly plan work at height prior to an incident where a worker fell from a roof void and broke his back.
Cambs Compressor Engineering Ltd was contracted to fit pipework, which was required for the installation of a moulding machine at Anson Packaging Ltd’s factory at Elean Business Park, Sutton.
On 29 October 2009, Antony Strong, a pipe fitter employed by Cambs Compressor Engineering, was installing pipes in a roof void above a suspended ceiling. Mr Strong and his supervisor were using a single crawl board to travel from the protected walkways in the roof to the place where the pipe work was to be installed.€
