Working at height: lessons learnt from recent incidents and prosecutions

Whilst the Work at Height Regulations and Sentencing Guidelines are now fully embedded in the minds of most, you may be surprised at the high number of incidents and breaches that still take place every year.

Kathryn Gilbertson and Sarah Lidgett from Greenwoods Solicitors will deliver a presentation at Safety & Health Expo to draw particular attention to the key regulations that are most commonly breached – and why this might be the case.

Kathryn Gilbertson

Of particular interest to delegates will be the review of recent work at height cases which have passed through the magistrate’s courts, with a look at what went wrong in those cases and how the offenders fared under the scrutiny of the Sentencing Guidelines 2016.

Sarah and Kathryn both have a wealth of knowledge of the health and safety industry. Kathryn Gilbertson has many years’ experience advising companies and government bodies in health and safety law, and has been described as a leading light in the sector.

Sarah Lidgett specialises in construction law, dealing with contentious litigation matters, health and safety issues and non-contentious drafting of contracts as part of large construction projects.

Specifically, Kathryn & Sarah will take you through the facts of a real-life case of 2017. This case related to two projects: the renovation of acres of farmland and its outbuildings into a high-end spa and holiday destination, and the renovation of large private country house. Both projects were run simultaneously by a single project manager, to varying degrees of success – with somewhat alarming photos to prove our point!

The presentation will showcase key errors that were made during those projects, discussing how some of these issues arose, and ultimately evaluating how the judge arrived at the verdict that she did. It will be of great value to anyone involved with working at height, covering a varied number of individuals in different job roles.

It will also be of particular interest to other project managers to hear about the mistakes made by individuals in our case study, and for specialist health and safety managers who may be able to take back some of the ‘lessons learnt’ to further develop and inform their own organisations.

However, everyone will be able to take something away from the session, even if that is just ‘what not to do’ in the future!

Attend the seminar to engaging with the other delegates and share your experiences of working at height, alongside the challenges this presents on a daily basis. If you have any questions please feel free to bring them with you and Kathryn & Sarah will be happy to answer them!

Join Sarah and Kathryn at 15:30 on the Operational Excellence Theatre, at Safety & Health Expo, on Wednesday June 20.
