New online resource for health-care professionals launched
GPs and other health-care professionals now have a ‘one-stop shop’ for a range of practical information on work and health.
Launched on 20 May by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the Healthy Working UK website offers news articles, decision aids, leaflets and guidance, as well as national and local contacts that could used by both health-care professionals and patients during consultations.
The site was initially funded though the Welsh Assembly Government, working with Cardiff University and The Healthcare Learning Company. It has now been extended to England and Scotland through funding from the Department for Work and Pensions, who worked in partnership with the RCGP, the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and the Society of Occupational Medicine.
It is just one part of a programme of work that includes modular ‘health e-working’ packages in primary and secondary care, and a national education programme for GPs.
Speaking at the launch, RCGP chairman Professor Steve Field said: “We welcome the development of any and all resources that improve the relationship GPs and primary health-care professionals have with their patients, and improve the quality of care that they receive. The Healthy Working UK resources are useful for both patients and professionals, and provide timely access to training, information and decision tools to support their daily practice.”
Professor Field also welcomed the success of a series of half-day RCGP health and work workshops, which have so far attracted more than 1400 GPs around the country. The workshops aim to increase GPs’ knowledge, skills and confidence in dealing with clinical issues relating to work and health, and have recently been revised to include material on the ‘fit note’.
The new site is at www.healthyworkinguk.co.uk Access to the health e-working for primary care e-learning sessions is free to NHS GPs, trainees and other primary-care professions. The sessions are available now in the ‘Healthy People’ section in the e-GP online resource www.e-GP.org
