MITIE apprentice scheme wins European recognition
Outsourcing company MITIE Group plc has won an international award for its apprentice programme.
MITIE’s Real Apprentice Programme was named the winner of the innovation category at the European Employee Volunteering Awards, which are organised by Business in the Community and are co-funded by the European Commission.
The 12-week programme is designed to help the long-term unemployed and people with physical or mental disabilities to get back to work. The initiative covers a range of skills including practicing face-to-face interviews; managing a budget; and working beside personnel from MITIE.
The programme has enrolled 197 people with 134 completing and 98 receiving permanent job offers. MITIE Group chief executive, Ruby McGregor-Smith, revealed she was delighted that the programme had been recognised. She said: “We are very proud of this ground-breaking programme, which helps people to find employment and really has changed the futures of the people who take part. Not only is there a social and moral case for working together to make a difference to peoples’ lives, but there’s also a solid business case. The Real Apprentice is about people helping people, and we encourage all individuals and organisations to get involved.”
