Free information- Managing risks in health care

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has recently updated the health-care section on its website to include a broader variety of good-practice information.

Around 10 per cent of European workers are employed in health care, and more than three quarters of them are women. The sector encompasses a wide range of activities and environments that can pose a threat to health, so the Agency has included more information and case studies on subjects like needlestick and sharps injuries, dealing with violence, and promoting good mental health.

Checklists, risk-assessment tools and FAQs are also available to help duty-holders address and monitor the biological, chemical, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial risks faced by health-care workers.

Meanwhile, the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) has launched a new magazine devoted to health and safety. HesaMag is a twice-yearly publication and it replaces the HESA newsletter.  Laurent Vogel, director of the ETUI’s health and safety department, said: “HesaMag aims to show that occupational health is not just a matter for the specialists, it is equally a question of everyday life and a major political issue.”

The current issue contains articles on nanotechnology, the electromagnetic fields directive, and safer working in the hair and beauty sector.
