Employers urged to go the extra smile

NEBOSH says the results of its survey of workers’ happiness and well-being show that British employers could do more to lift the mood of their workers.

The survey of more than 1000 working people revealed that 60 per cent of UK workers are happy at work, with 10 per cent describing themselves as “extremely happy” when doing their job. However, as many 84 per cent of those questioned said they were happy away from work, with 20 per cent feeling “extremely happy” during their free time.

Commenting on the findings, NEBOSH chief executive Teresa Budworth said: “Although the majority of people in Britain are happy at work, 40 per cent aren’t. Happy workers tend to be more productive, so it’s a good idea for employers to take steps to ensure people feel good about work.”

One area that NEBOSH thinks employers should focus on is health and well-being, as the poll found that almost 22 per cent of UK workers are unhappy in this respect. €
