HPE & RPE validation in spotlight for 3M webinars

Manufacturing firm 3M will offer advice about validating different types of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the next two instalments of its free Safety Spotlight Webinar Series.

The eighth webinar in the science-based technology company’s popular series, titled ‘Hearing Protection Validation – Advanced’, will run from 12.15 to 13.00 on 4 July.

It will be led by 3M technical specialist Simon Field, who will build on some of the information shared in his previous webinar, ‘Introduction to PPE Validation’.

HPE validation

Field will take a closer look at hearing protection equipment (HPE) validation techniques and how they can be used to improve hearing conservation programmes. In addition, he will offer a demonstration of the E-A-Rfit Dual Ear Validation System from 3M.

He said: “Many people will be aware of fit testing, because for certain PPE it is required. However, many are unaware of recent developments in the field of fit testing for hearing protection.

“Fit testing is an excellent way to ensure that workers are getting the right level of protection for them as individuals and in their specific environments.”

RPE

The following webinar in the series will run from 12.15 to 13.00 on 12 July.

‘Fit Testing Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)’ will be presented by Alan McArthur, UK technical services supervisor for 3M’s Personal Safety division.

McArthur will cover topics including why fit testing is required and the types of products it applies to; the main fit testing methods available; how to establish a successful fit testing programme; the importance of being clean shaven and how to manage facial hair in the workplace; and the competence of fit testers and the Fit2Fit accreditation scheme.

McArthur said: “Employers are legally required to face fit test wearers of tight-fitting RPE to ensure that the respirator is capable of sealing adequately to the individual’s face, as the equipment’s performance hinges on this.

“This webinar will provide a great opportunity for anyone involved in health and safety to learn more about this topic, and to ask any questions they may have.”

Knowledge

The 45-minute sessions will be suitable for anyone from company directors and health and safety managers to employees who simply wish to broaden their knowledge of the topics.

Those participating will be able to ask questions in real time, both during and after the webinars, which will be broadcast live online.

Webinar attendance may also be used towards CPD points.
