Virgin Atlantic’s new safety video: does it grab your attention?

Getting passengers to actually listen to safety information is a problem faced by every airline company across the world. We have all seen it, and probably all done it; as soon as the safety information spiel starts, people switch off. It is an important part of the safety process for any flight, but it doesn’t make it any more engaging.

Some airline companies have gone to great lengths to make it more interesting, and primarily that inlcudes video. Virgin Atlantic has used a video that tries to put the message across in a humourous way, but after 12 years, that was no longer doing the job. So the company commissioned this animated video from Art and Graft, which aims to inject some excitement into the safety message through a series of cinematic pastiches.

Do you think it’s an effective way to deliver the message, or do you think distracts from it? What interesting ways to deliver safety messages have you come across? Post in the comment section below.

Too long, watched once and not again. The actual demo does not last that long on flights.

Quite rivetting – a very good idea.

I found it gimmicky and quite annoying; if you can’t pay attention to something for a couple of minutes that could save your life, there’s really no hope for you. If they must use animations, how about showing the consequences of not following the instructions, that’s more likely to grab your attention.

I think this is a great idea.

I think it’s spot on and keeps your attention. Air New Zealand had their safety flight info film that starred Bear Grylls

A good concept ,however, some of the voices were not coherent and for a passenger with hearing difficulties they may not hear fully the intended safety information. It will appeal to children but for me I didn’t find it that engaging.

Cabin crew are trained to deliver the safety presentations and I believe that most passengers would prefer this to continue

a really good film and certainly more engaging than most inflight safety films.

I really like it. It’s creative and sends a clear message in an engaging way.

The only cautionary note I have is beware, eventually the novelty will wear off so it may need to be refreshed and this could cost.

I can’t understand why I have to be treated like a child. The information can be given in less than a quarter of the time if done succinctly. Although I will have read the safety leaflet already, I will listen to a short announcement, identify differences between this and the last one and pay attention to it.

The way this video is presented guarantees that I will not pay attention to the announcement.

The last minute of the video says it all… lets get real and not cloud the issue with cartoons and animals in commercials as they are now days…. the video shows a circus and thats about right… keep safety balanced and in perspective and not aimed at children
