Training – ‘Life-changing event’ DVD
The Royal Life Saving Society UK has commissioned a ‘life-changing event’ DVD in association with QLM Ltd. The DVD focuses on the aftermath of a tragedy, and is described as a powerful training resource.
It recreates a fictitious swimming-pool rescue, which is unsuccessful. After the incident, the scene switches to the courtroom, where the organisation is being prosecuted under the HSWA 1974. An expert provides opinion on the underlying failings of the organisation, after which the pool manager and lifeguard are cross-examined.
The final section of the DVD is an interview with Penny and Terry Matthews, whose son Nathan drowned in 2004. The principles communicated are said to apply to any workplace, and the DVD is supplied with guidance notes for trainers.
Says QLM managing director, Peter Mills: “This DVD provides an insight into what happens when employees appear in court and the impact it has on them. We hope it will drill into managers and staff the importance of following guidelines [to avoid] falling into similar situations.”
