Pedestrians and forklift trucks don’t mix, warns FLTA

Britain’s first ever national Fork Lift Safety Week takes place this week (22-28 September), with a clear and simple message: ‘Pedestrians and forklift trucks don’t mix’.
The Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA), which is organising the initiative, points out that statistics suggest as many as two thirds of accidents kill or injure someone who was not driving the truck at the time.
The UK’s 350,000 forklift trucks account for more serious accidents at work than cars and HGVs combined, hospitalising more than 400 employees each year, claims the FLTA. An average a death occurs every six weeks — increasing to one every fortnight in September.
The Week marks the culmination of a month-long campaign by the Association and its members to raise awareness of the dangers posed by trucks, and reduce the toll of death and injury.
Businesses are encouraged to take advantage of a range of free resources available throughout September on the FLTA website. Items include guidance, fact sheets and safety quizzes for staff.
