Movers and shakers – New training centre for fork-lift blackspot
Staff at a college in West Yorkshire are hoping that a new training centre will help improve the region’s alarming record of fork-lift truck accidents.
The Logistics Training Centre, run by Wakefield College’s commercial training arm, Services to Business, is based at the Aire and Calder Industrial Park in Castleford. Officially opened on 30 April, the new centre will provide training facilities for people working in, or wishing to work in, the warehousing industry.
Areas covered by the training will include mechanical handling, equipment, logistics, health and safety, and operations management. Individuals will also be given hands-on experience in the operation of fork-lifts, and cherry- and reach-pickers.
A recent report from the Fork-Lift Truck Association suggested that Wakefield was the second worst blackspot in the country for accidents involving fork-lift trucks, while areas in Yorkshire account for three of the nation’s top six accident areas.
Services to Business manager, Kate Dyson, said: “Wakefield College’s values centre around providing relevant courses and training to our employers in our region. West Yorkshire has one of the worst records for fork-lift truck accidents in the country; our new Centre provides a great facility to assist businesses to ensure that they have a skilled, competent and safe workforce.”
The new centre will also benefit individuals who have been unemployed and claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance for more than six months. The College has been working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus to provide free training in areas such as customer service, warehousing, IT, retail and security.
