Driver safety – RAC fleet risk management programme

UK armed forces retail, catering and leisure services provider NAAFI has appointed RAC Risk Management to carry out a complete fleet risk management programme, incorporating risk assessments, e-learning and on-road driver training for more than 500 drivers.

The NAAFI fleet consists of both company vehicles and “grey fleet” vehicles – privately-owned vehicles used on company business.

Following a full audit to highlight key areas where action was needed to meet current legislation, NAAFI launched the second phase of a ‘permit to drive’ programme. This incorporates Safe Driving Plus, described by RAC RM as an online interactive risk-reduction system for corporate fleets that is designed to change behaviour and reduce accidents and injuries.

Each individual driver has a unique login to the e-learning system, and the programme provides them with a personal action plan to reduce road risk, adds the company. After a comprehensive risk assessment, those identified as medium risk go on to complete RAC’s e-learning module, while those identified as high risk undergo one-to-one training on the road with RAC instructors. Licence and business insurance checks are carried out and a permit to drive is provided on completion of all the required sections.
