Taking asbestos education to the digital streets

by Linda Reinstein, president/CEO, Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO)

MesobannerThis September, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) launched a month of awareness with our new “Raise Your Voice | #ENDMeso campaign in preparation for Mesothelioma Awareness Day on 26 September.

On average, around 6,000 tweets are shared every second across the globe. In less than a decade, Twitter has become an invaluable social media platform for nonprofits, health and safety professionals, and businesses.

During September, the health and safety and asbestos awareness community has an excellent opportunity to maximise its voice, brand, and visibility by participating in three Twitter chats during this month.

The asbestos facts to share during this month are staggering:

  • Each year, an estimated 2,000,000 metric tons of asbestos is mined in the world – and the dangers continue. It is reprehensible that asbestos remains legal and lethal in the United States and in about 75% of the world.
  • The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reported “there were 2,538 mesothelioma deaths in Great Britain in 2013, a similar number to the 2,548 deaths in 2012, but substantially higher than the 2,312 deaths in 2011.”
  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “more than 107,000 deaths each year are attributable to occupational exposure to asbestos.”

Join us tomorrow for the 2nd #ENDMeso Twitter Chat on 8 September from 12-1 PM ET (5pm BST), as victims, experts, advocates, business, and concerned citizens join the global conversation to connect, share, and raise asbestos awareness.

Each one-hour #ENDMeso Twitter Chat will feature a relevant topic or question regarding asbestos awareness to be discussed live by our Twitter community.

Our topics include:

8 September:             FACTS: The Truth about asbestos and mesothelioma.

15 September:           What is your message to Congress?

22 September:          What are you doing for Mesothelioma Awareness Day?

raiseyourvoiceParticipating is easy! Any Twitter user can tweet during this designated time using our conversation hashtag #ENDMeso or simply view the conversation by following the hashtag #ENDMeso. Special thanks to David Cant, for capturing the conversation and posting it on Storify.

There is a strong movement for change. It is our voices and our spirit that will bring change and social media allows us to crank up the volume.

But our job is not done yet! The World Health Organization states there are more than 107,000 people die each year from asbestos-related disease and asbestos. In the US, we suffer from Congressional inaction, willful blindness, and corporate malfeasance. In the non-profit world, where we must make maximum impact with minimum cost, the digital revolution is an integral tool to creating the meaningful change we hope to see. Each of our shared stories brings our community closer together.

While promising research continues, prevention remains the old cure. I look forward to our continued health and safety collaboration. As ADAO says, “Hear Asbestos. Think Prevention.” As time has proven: together, change in possible.

lindareinsteinGuest blogger, Linda Reinstein, the President/CEO and Co-Founder of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), is delighted to partner for prevention with SHP. ADAO is the largest independent nonprofit in the U.S. dedicated to preventing asbestos caused diseases through national and international education, advocacy, and community initiatives.
