Nominations for SHP’s 2024 Most Influential person are now being accepted.
SHP’s Most Influential person in health and safety recognises the person who has had the biggest, positive impact on health and safety in the UK this year, a leader who has made a significant impact in the profession. The accolade is part of the wider SHP Awards programme.
SHP readers can now nominate a person who they believe fits the bill, as part of the SHP Awards 2024. The list of nominations will then be put to the SHP Awards judging panel which will draw up a final shortlist, which will then go to a public vote.
A special list and winner
At the end of November, SHP will publish your selected list of the most influential people in health and safety, and the person you have voted as having the biggest influence in the profession.
In 2023, the award was won by Steven Harris, for his tireless work in training, mentoring and continuing to inspire health and safety professionals.
On winning last year’s award, he said: “My heartfelt thanks to all those who nominated and voted for me; and my deepest respect and admiration to the other 25 nominees. I am genuinely delighted, and the fact that this year’s award is in tribute to the memory of Mavis Nye for her campaigning around asbestos awareness makes it even more special.”
Criteria, guidance and advice when sending your nominations
The SHP Most Influential awards continues to be one of the highest accolades in the profession, recognised by UK and international practitioners. Being named in the top 10 shortlist is also coveted and seen as an achievement in the sector. It aims to target the senior levels of the profession, especially at the peak of their profession.
However, they are not recognised just because of long service but more around impact, influence and leadership, while also providing mentoring opportunities for others.
As such, judges will be looking for nominations that demonstrate leadership through integrity and transparency; nominees will have shown an ability to transform the behaviours of others through productive feedback and impeccable communication. They will be at the peak of their profession, not necessarily recognised for their time in the role but for the general impact and influence they have demonstrated.
“Recognise influence”
Last year’s winner, Steve added: “Don’t just vote for a ‘name’ that keeps popping up in industry journals or on LinkedIn. Read through the entries carefully and cast your vote for a person who has proven their influence through positive change in the service of others. Someone who has lowered risk and saved lives. It is important that this award continues to recognise influence, and not popularity”.
