Elizabeth Joseph wins SHP Rising Star Transport Industry Award

The Rising Star Award for the Transport Industry category has been announced, with finalist Elizabeth Joseph taking the trophy.

Elizabeth, Assistant Designated Person Ashore Shell Int. Trading & Shipping Co., is committed to making a difference to the lives of many people so that they benefit from safer and healthier working environments. She values the exchange of ideas, collaboration and the importance of making continuous improvements in the workplace.

By developing innovative, comprehensive final emergency response protocols, she rewrote and enhanced the Oil Spill Pollution Response procedure for the Marine Terminal for which she was responsible. She has researched and made improvements for seafarers in human factors, process safety and for those working with high vibration equipment. Elizabeth remains passionate about passing on skills to younger professionals. As a co-founder of Shell’s Health and Safety Young Professionals’ network she has expanded this to have a global outreach.

She grabbed the attention of the judges as not only is she a recent graduate working in a male dominated industry, but because of her exceptional productivity and dedication for research.

Judges were impressed with her “going the extra mile, internally and externally,” mentioning how Elizabeth had co-founded Shell’s H&S Young Professional’s network, which has scaled globally. Judges added “she goes beyond the day job showing ambition and initiative” as she provided young professionals a platform to develop skills in the industry.

Internally, Elizabeth did not let the male dominated industry become a barrier for excelling. Judges said she showed determination and dedication to learn when she went away to learn from sailors, they appreciated her grassroots learning approach. Elizabeth uncovered there was limited risk management on Hand-Arm-Vibration, acknowledged by judges as a “tough nut to crack”, for the Company’s seafarers. She therefore undertook a three-week voyage on the largest LNG carrier, gathering exposure data, consolidating findings and promoting awareness. She implemented control measures across the fleet. This self-initiative helped her further develop in effective communication and collaborate with people from diverse cultural backgrounds to improve their health & wellbeing.
