Brett Edkins wins SHP’s Rising Star Construction Industry Award

Brett Edkins, Health & Safety Manager at Grangewood, was rewarded for his health & safety, and veterans programme.

Brett orchestrated a complete redevelopment of two companies. He completed his health & safety diploma within eight weeks in 2017 and inherited a health & safety which had seen an accident and subsequent prosecution. His work and subsequent buy-in form people allowed for a swift turnaround which accrued into a prestigious RoSPA Gold Award. He has also assisted in developing a veteran’s programme.

Brett wowed the judges with his remarkable devotion for two sectors. They said he had “an interesting story, went above and beyond and showed a high level of initiative.” He is “Driving change, exploring technology and showing good commercial awareness,” they added

His high level of initiative in driving change and renovate a health & safety programme, which was awarded RoSPA Gold, left the judges with no choice but to pick him as the winner for Rising Star in Construction.

But it was not only Brett’s health & safety programme that caught the judge’s attention, his assistance in developing a veteran’s programme persuaded them over. They said “[his] military veterans work experience is commendable and beyond the day job, it makes a cultural change to a previously designed unchangeable workforce, it is the holy grail in our profession of health & safety and is refreshing to read”.

Brett is assisting in developing a veterans programme where future Army veterans are given a work-experience package where they would shadow the health & safety department so as to aid in their transition into civilian life from the Armed Forces.
