Throwback Thursday: Industrial safety & health management
In January 1990, John Ballard analysed industrial safety and health management of the offshore oil industry in the wake of the Piper Alpha disaster. In July 1988, 167 people were killed in a fire on the oil rig, and the industry responded by reviewing its operational and safety procedures to prevent another incident.
Ballard visited Mobil North Sea Ltd and two of its offshore platforms in the Beryl Field and discovered how Mobil tackled health and safety management. The article breaks down his analysis into sections, including life offshore, induction training, emergency procedures, and hazard management.
