Throwback Thursday: Disaster management
In a May 2002 article for SHP magazine, Jonathan Boddy explained how best to prepare for accidents and incidents at work. What looks to the outside world as a small thing could in fact have a big impact on a business. He offered his tips on how to manage a crisis, as well as possible interest from the public in the aftermath of an accident.
Boddy gives the defining characteristics of a crisis situation (fast-moving, unexpected, needs immediate attention, etc.), then goes on to cover the steps involved in good disaster management planning. He also examines the need for a good communications team, and why having a communications response plan is vital.
Boddy also gives real-life examples of how businesses have responded to crises, including Britannia Airways and the Herald of Free Enterprise.
