Research – Leadership- The power to transform

The Executive has just published a research report, for which it surveyed employees of both managerial and non-managerial grades, exploring to what extent transformational leaders can affect employee absence in UK
public-sector organisations. Ill-health absence costs the UK economy around £17 billion a year.A transformational leader is one who is not only supportive of employees’ needs but also is able to set a personal example, to stimulate, develop, and inspire staff. The style of leadership has been found to relate to a wide range of positive work outcomes, including job satisfaction, commitment, and work performance. On the whole, the study concluded that although transformational leadership is not a powerful antidote to withdrawal behaviours among employees, it is able to foster an encouraging work climate, which has a knock-on effect on the number of psychosomatic
symptoms reported by employees. The full report, RR648, can be downloaded from www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr648.htm
