New ‘Gold Standard’ training course for process industries

NEBOSH has launched a new ‘Gold Standard’ qualification for people working in the process industries.

The ‘NEBOSH Award in Safety, Health and Environment for the Process Industries’ aims to help both employers and employees demonstrate competence in general health and safety, process safety, and environmental management.

The qualification was developed in conjunction with Cogent – the Sector Skills Council for the process industries – employers, the National Skills Academy for the Process Industries (NSAPI), and NEBOSH/NSAPI – accredited providers. It is made up of four units, of which the first covers workplace safety and looks at issues such as: risk assessment and control; fire; electrical and transport safety; manual handling; and hazardous substances.€ﾨ €ﾨThe second unit looks more closely at risk assessment and includes a work-based assessment. Unit three deals with process safety, including: common risks and controls; containment; plant integrity; and emergency response. The final unit is concerned with environmental management and covers control of emissions and environmental risk assessments.

NEBOSH chief executive Teresa Budworth claims the qualification is a “must-have” for anyone working in the major hazards sector. She said: “Process operators, technicians and line supervisors must all be competent in safety, health and environmental in order to ensure compliance.”

Cogent education and qualifications director, James Murdock, added: “The NEBOSH Safety, Health and Environment for the Process Industries qualification is an integral part of the Gold Standard framework, and is mapped against competencies defined by employers for health and safety.”
