Managing risk in cold work conditions
ISO 15743:2008 Ergonomics of the thermal environment – cold workplaces – risk assessment and management gives practical instructions for risk analysis and management in cold working conditions. It describes models and methods for risk assessment practices, identifying symptoms in individuals sensitive to cold, applying different international thermal standards, and practical working in cold conditions.
Adverse effects that can be experienced by those working in such conditions include thermal discomfort, compromised performance, and cold-related diseases and injuries. Those typically at risk include workers in construction, utilities, telecommunications, agriculture, meat processing and in the food transport chain.
Chair of the ISO sub-committee that developed the standard, Prof Ken Parsons, commented: “It supports good occupational health and safety practice, and will help developers, manufacturers, management, occupational safety personnel, health-care workers, and others.”
The standard costs 120 Swiss Francs (approx. £60) and can be purchased from the ISO website at the link below.
