Free information- Influence key to leadership
Effective health and safety leadership is about influence, not authority, according to a report from Cardinus Risk Management.
Jon Abbott, the company’s managing director of ergonomics and safety, believes that managers responsible for health and safety can achieve much better results by using a few simple leadership skills to win the support of senior managers and staff.
Commenting in relation to the report, entitled Effective safety leadership, he said: “While many safety practitioners are able to influence managers, there are few who are able to assert the same level of influence over senior executives. More than ever, safety needs to be integrated into every part of a business. Corporate strategies will rely on a number of disciplines, and safety should be at the heart of these.”
The free report contains lots of advice for health and safety professionals who need to get their message heard and acted upon at board level. It has been written by Barry Holt, head of health and safety consultancy at Cardinus, and Keith Scott, group head of safety at Royal Mail, and chair of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
