Fire-protection garments

Last year, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service became the first in the country to choose the latest technology from DuPont and Hainsworth. Manufactured by Bristol Uniforms the new fire-fighting kit is made from TITAN® fabric that incorporates the DuPont™ fibres NOMEX® and KEVLAR®.

According to DuPont, the stylish kit has dedicated male and female styles. Frank Swann, chief fire officer of the service, commented: “We carried out a variety of independent trials and these confirmed that the TITAN kit performed extremely well, offering comfort and ease of movement for all our fire-fighters.”

The kit is made from a patented double-cloth construction, with NOMEX on the face to provide optimal thermal protection, abrasion resistance, and colour fastness, and Kevlar on the back to provide strength. When exposed to intense heat or flame, the NOMEX is said to consolidate, causing the Kevlar to ripple and remain undamaged. This creates air pockets that are said to offer the garment wearer greater thermal insulation when it is most needed.

Recent tests on the DuPont Thermo-Man® facility (pictured) predicted that wearers of the new TITAN kit would withstand a duration of eight seconds of flash fire, with between zero and 3-per-cent burn injuries.
