CCS launches ultra sites to meet industry demand

The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) has launched ultra sites to further raise industry standards and collaboration among clients, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers.

The concept was developed in collaboration with Canary Wharf Contractors Ltd, which requested that the national scheme help create better collaboration across the construction industry.

Ultra sites are currently being piloted by a consortium of leading construction companies – Canary Wharf Contractors Ltd; Galliford Try Partnerships; Land Securities; Mulalley; Rydon; and the Berkeley Group Holdings Plc.

The idea behind ultra sites is that they are only awarded to those sites that take considerate construction to the highest level. Sites achieve this status by stipulating that a number of suppliers and subcontractors engaged with a site are also to be registered with the scheme, which helps to further extend the benefits of membership for many suppliers that may not typically register with the scheme.

Ultra sites are construction sites that exceed the CCS’s code of considerate practice. They are monitored regularly and are required to operate at the very highest standards across the scheme’s code.

“The construction industry is acutely aware of its need to work more closely together, and is increasingly realising the commercial, social and environmental benefits of greater integration. Ultra sites are the next level of achieving even greater standards and collaboration across the entire industry,” said Edward Hardy, CCS’s chief executive.

To date, over 85,000 sites have been monitored by the scheme.

In January 2015, the CCS introduced the best practice hub, a comprehensive online resource showcasing best practice in the sector.
