Safety guidance covered powered gates

Guidance on a wide range of powered gate safety issues has been published by the Door & Hardware Federation Powered Gate Group.

The guides are the latest addition to the online library of advisory documents which include the DHF Guide to Gate Safety Legislation & Standards, says the Group.

The online resource is said to be aimed at those involved in the installation, inspection and maintenance of powered gates and all those responsible for the safety of gates, including owners and facilities managers.

The DHF Powered Gate Group produced the guides following a number of inspections of unsafe gate installations carried out by the federation’s inspectors. DHF training officer Nick Perkins comments: “The publication of these latest guides is part of our continuing drive to raise standards of safety in the industry.

“There have been a number of incidents involving powered gates reported to us and our own inspectors have carried out many checks on non compliant gates. As a result we’ve significantly expanded our online library of advisory documents to cover the problems we have encountered.”

According to DHF Powered Gate Group, the guides:

  • detail the safety hazards found during inspection
  • give comprehensive advice on how the hazards can be controlled
  • cover topics including telescopic sliding gate safety, care in the use of safety circuits and how sliding gate rolling gear and swing gate ram mounting geometry impacts on safety.

There is also a detailed guidance document for domestic, commercial and industrial owners of powered gate systems, says the group.

The guides can be downloaded by both DHF members and non-members at www.dhfonline.org.uk/publications-gates-automation.aspx
