CLS develops training suite for the HSEQ professional

By Claire Smith, Director, CLS Training & Consultancy Limited

With more and more clients requiring Health and Safety, Environmental and Quality Managers packaged into one individual, this means that a lot of professionals are potentially ill equipped to effectively meet clients’ demands.

So what does this mean for the health and safety professional?

The requirement for Continual Professional Development (CPD) in the field of Health and Safety can be both challenging and time consuming, to stay current in an ever changing work environment. Add in environmental management and quality control and we run the risk of becoming a jack of all trades and a master of none.

We can take some comfort that changes to ISO standards do allow for a more integrated approach to management standards enabling an integrated risk approach to managing risks.

The message does mirror the Health and Safety Executive’s call for proportionate risk management rather than processes that are increasingly complex and bureaucratic.

Taking together the increased need to tackle quality and efficiently in the industry, the requirement to demonstrate management systems whether that be HSG65 or OHSAS 18001 (Soon to be ISO45001), and the general need for all involved to have a greater understanding of all the risks, CLS Training & Consultancy Ltd developed a suite of training courses to address these issues.

Courses have been well received by companies here and in Europe, an added benefit of regulated qualifications is the ease of comparison with the European qualification framework. This enables companies to move freely throughout Europe and the UK with recognised skills, knowledge and experience.

Working with stakeholders in the renewable energy sector, courses were developed for operatives to understand not only their health and safety responsibilities, but also what impacts quality failures can have and what environmental impacts they could create.

Supervisor training in risk assessment, whether leading or contributing to the risk assessment process considers quality and environmental implications of tasks and also the balance given to each.

Management training, ideal for site and project managers, utilises the various standards, whether HSG65 or ISO and provides real world examples for management and auditing of works while enabling delegates to understand the business benefits of integrated risk management and not just the legal requirements.

We are pleased to be working alongside TQUK as an awarding body. They have fully understood the need for this training, and enabled us to achieve OFQUAL recognition at QCF level 2, 3 and 4 for the respective courses. The first time a HSEQ qualification has achieved this recognition.
