Surprisingly stylish safety wear

Tony Skelton, Intersafety Ltd, gives a run down of the most stylish safety items on the high street.
1. Asymmetrical helmets
For bikers sick of helmet hair, designer Daniel Don Chang has created the asymmetrical helmet to compensate for the utilitarian feel of unisex helmets. Available in different colours and withinterior cushioning, these helmets still deliver all the safety features associated with a conventional safety helmet.
2. Light emanating apparel
For those on a bike, reflective clothing is an unfortunate necessity but wearing functional and unflattering clothing when meeting your friends after a ride is no one’s idea of a good time. Designer reflective shirts are comfortable and made of quick dry, odour-free breathable fabric, and most importantly, they ensure the wearer is visible to traffic.
3. Crocs
Although initially intended as a spa shoe, crocs are becoming increasingly popular with professionals. Made from a waterproof material and with a non-slip tread, these shoes are safe, secure and actually soothe injured feet. Good for those with bunions and aches, these comfortable shoes offer great support for people who spend all day on their feet.
4. Designer safety glasses
Just like regular safety glasses, designer glasses feature reinforced anti-scratch lenses and ergonomic frames to ensure maximum protection for your eyes, while looking pretty stylish. Without compromising on durability, these glasses from brands like Univet, Bolle and Uvex feature a streamlined design and are available in a range of different colours.
5. Motorcycle jackets
Newer smart designs feature slim line padding concealed within classic, slim shapes, cut from soft leather. Opt for one of these designs and relax safe in the knowledge that your CE-certified jacket complies with all industry requirements while making you feel like Steve McQueen.
6. Hard hats
A staple of any labourer’s safety kit, companies are finally moving with the times and creating hard hat designs that combine style and safety. Available in different colours and designs, now you can pick out a hard hat knowing it will deliver the high quality protection you need while facing down the stereotype that safety products are always hideous and unfashionable.
7. Glow in the dark accessories
With everything from knitwear to rucksacks available with glow in the dark reflective designs, you never need to worry about being seen at night again. Ditch that high visibility vest and ensure you will always be safe on the road by opting for vests and hats in muted designs that can take you seamlessly from day to night with UV patterns.
8. Bright bands
For pedestrians walking their dogs (particularly in the winter months) it’s important to stay safe on the UK’s roads and pathways. Try reflective dog leashes, pet jackets, arm bands and accessories to stay visible without looking ridiculous.
9. Armoured hoodies
Whether you’re rollerblading, skateboarding or going on a short cycle ride, sometimes you just need an extra layer of protection against injuries. Try a heavy duty armoured hoodie, complete with a tough outer shell, reinforced lining and ribbed cuffs.
10. Riding gloves
For motorcycle and scooter riders the world over, hands can become sore and irritated by wind and sweaty hand grips. Riding gloves are now smooth, streamlined and stylish, you can pick up an understated set of gloves that will protect your palms and spare you the rigours of the elements.
