Person killed in training exercise at RAF base

A member of the armed forces has died in a training exercise at an RAF base in Scotland.

RAF Tain bombing range in Dornoch Firth , about 30 miles from Inverness, is a large piece of land used to train pilots from the RAF, US Air Force and other NATO forces in bombing.

Emergency services were called to the facility at about 17:55 on Tuesday.

Police Scotland has said they are launching an investigation to find out the full details of the incident, but say it is “contained” and there is no threat to the public.

No one else was harmed in the incident, the range has been sealed off and the person’s next of kin have been informed.

A spokesperson for the Army said: “We are aware of an incident at the Tain base, near Inverness.

“We will release more information as and when it becomes available. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this point.”
