Noise and vibration reduction – 3M vibration damping tapes

Diversified technology company 3M has highlighted the role that can be played by specialist sound damping tapes in reducing noise from vibration in industrial environments.

The company believes that modern aluminium-foil sound-damping tapes can contribute towards noise reduction on equipment such as compressors, HVAC and production machinery. Furthermore, by decreasing vibration, they can also help reduce wear on equipment.

Tapes can deliver effective sound damping with as little as 10-per-cent surface coverage and deliver long-lasting performance. 3M says its Vibration Damping Tapes are pressure-sensitive and the linered construction of the product allows it to be die cut, maximising ease of application.

Gareth Evans, technical service specialist for 3M’s Industrial Adhesives & Tapes Division, commented: “Modern sound damping tapes are highly effective in reducing vibration and therefore noise. They also help eliminate fatigue cracks due to skin, or panel vibration. They were originally developed for highly demanding applications in sectors such as aerospace, meaning they are able to operate effectively in extremes of temperature and in the presence of chemicals such as solvents and hydraulic fluids.”
