Well done- Rail company wins major safety trophy
The company, which operates local and inter-urban rail services in the north and north east of England, was announced as the winner of the safety charity’s Sir George Earle Trophy, at a ceremony in Birmingham on 14 May.The company also came out on top in the Transport and Distribution Sector and WIS Trophy for workforce involvement in safety and health.Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA chief executive, said: “The judging panel found that safety was at the very heart of Northern Rail’s values, and that strong leadership and the direct personal commitment of board members were matched by workforce involvement and partnerships with trades unions and others.”Other major award winners included: the Astor Trophy for the best-managed occupational-health programme – E.ON UK Occupational Health Service; RoSPA Training Trophy – Mears Group plc; International Dilmun Environmental Award – AWE plc; ROSPA Managing Occupational Road Risk Trophy – Tesco Dotcom, Welwyn Garden City; and Best New Entry Award – Petronas Ammonia Sdn Bhd.Facilities services and maintenance provider, Interserve, also enjoyed a successful evening by scooping 23 awards in total. The company’s haul included second place in the Facilities Management Sector Award and a President’s Award for Defence. It also picked up 17 RoSPA Gold Awards and four Silver Awards for its health and safety record on specific contracts.Overall, the awards saw more than 1650 organisations honoured.
