Well done- Kiwis recognise cream of the crop
Organised by New Zealand publication, Safeguard magazine, the awards are in their fifth year and are supported by the Department of Labour. KiwiRail impressed the judges with its commitment to measure its own safety culture by engaging an outside facilitator to conduct confidential focus groups involving staff.The company also won the category of NZ Best Safety Initiative to encourage engagement in health and safety. Other winners on the night included: Paper Reclaim; Air New Zealand Group; Metrowater, KiwiRail Corporate; NZ Steel; PJ & MJ Olsen and Skyline Harvesting Ltd; Northern Gateway Alliance; and Otago District Health Board.Individual honours went to Paul Reyneke of Foodstuffs (Auckland), who picked up the prestigious health and safety practitioner of the year award, and Michelle Scarf of the Otago District Health Board, who was recognised in ‘the most influential employee’ category. Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Marlene Thomson, for her services in promoting awareness of occupational health, and lawyer and trade unionist, Ross Wilson, for his services in engaging workers in health and safety.

KiwiRail took home the leading prize at the New Zealand WorkplaceHealth and Safety Awards 2009 gala dinner, held at SkyCity ConventionCentre in Auckland in May.
