Well done – Consultancy wins rail safety award
Capita Symonds has become the first consultancy to receive the Crossrail Health & Safety award.
The award recognises the firm’s commitment to health and safety issues in its design process, as well as its overall safety performance. Capita Symonds was given the award for its work during the creation of tunnel portals at North Woolwich and Plumstead.
The projects faced some major CDM considerations, which included managing the need for tall plant working alongside the live railway and local road network. The company also provided designs that allow safe maintenance and operation of the railway, including emergency escape provisions and facilities for emergency intervention by the London Fire Brigade.
Capita Symonds project director, Jon Baber, said: “Capita Symonds teams working on the Crossrail project have adopted an extremely pro-active process in their design work. CDM risk management is an intrinsic part of our design process and is used as a decision making tool from the outset.
“As well as safe practice in design, the Capita Symonds teams have adopted a mind set that puts safety first and have developed a strong culture of safety awareness through the toolbox talk process, safety observations process, and the broken lives campaign in which all members of staff are actively involved.”
