Waste contractor wins SHE award

Waste management specialist Veolia Environmental Services has won a European award for exemplary SHE performance.

Veolia was named the winner of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) European SHE Gold Award, following an evaluation of contractors working across all of SABIC’s sites in Europe.

Veolia provides recycling and waste management services, from collection of hazardous waste to industrial cleaning at SABIC’s petrochemical manufacturing site in Teesside. The award follows rigorous auditing and is acknowledgement of Veolia’s operational safety performance. The company is said to have stood out from other competitors on its near miss reporting, training hours of its operatives and audit scoring.  The audits are designed to assess whether safe systems of work are being adhered to, and also test the competence of the supervisor and crew working on site.

The judging criteria were split into eight categories, which were assessed using a weighted scoring system to determine the level of action undertaken by an organisation. These areas included: audits of work on site, man hours worked on site, accidents on site, incidents on site, near misses occurred and reported on site, behavioural safety observations on site, training hours of operations and number of internal audits of work carried out.

Veolia commercial and industrial managing director, David Lusher, said: “We are delighted to receive this prestigious award and realise that we need to maintain this high level of performance. It demonstrates our ability to deliver innovative solutions while setting high standards in health and safety performance and reflects the environmental improvements and safety culture which is being embedded throughout the company.”
