Union welcomes step to reduce bogus self-employment
The Treasury has launched a consultation aimed at reducing bogus
self-employment in the construction industry — a move that UCATT has
welcomed as a first step in reducing worker exploitation and improving
site safety.
Bogus self-employment occurs when workers are officially classified as self-employed but have all the normal working relationships of an employee.
The Government proposes that all construction workers be deemed employees unless they supply their own materials, provide a large amount of plant, or provide other people’s labour as well as their own.
UCATT says sites that use the bogus self-employed have lower safety levels, leading to workers being at greater risk of being injured or killed.
The consultation is available here.
