Research- Sickness benefits crucial in credit crunch
Of the respondents to Aon Consulting’s survey of the benefits most desired by employees in relation to sickness, 88 per cent rated being paid while off work as the most desirable benefit. Various types of ill-health insurance were the next most popular options, while occupational health and counselling came significantly further down the list, cited by 55 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively.Interestingly, well-being options, such as healthy canteen food, subsidised gym membership, and weight-loss support were all more popular with respondents. Less surprisingly, the health-care and insurance options had greater appeal to older workers, while the subsidised gym was more favoured by younger workers.Commenting on the findings, head of health-care consulting at Aon, Alex Bennett, said: “At a time when workers are worried about their financial future, it is no surprise that rather than concentrating on staying healthy, they focus on how they are going to manage in the event that they do become sick. However, we all know that it is far better to prevent illness rather than deal with the consequences of it.“Employers often use their benefits plans as a means to get people back to work as quickly as possible after illness. However, it is far more cost-effective for an employer to combine these benefits with those that help employees prevent illness. Integrating health and wellness benefits with absence procedures and occupational health results in a win-win situation for both employers and employees.”
