Quarrying firm chalks up safety honour

A Lincolnshire mining company has been praised for its ‘outstanding excellence in health and safety’ at the Mineral Products Association Awards.

Held last week at BAFTA, London, the MPA’s Health & Safety Conference and Awards 2012 saw chalk-quarrying company Singleton Birch pick up the John Crabbe Memorial Trophy.

Other winners on the night included Stanton Bonna Concrete, which won the Sir Frank Davies Trophy for companies with fewer than 1000 employees; Tarmac, Buxton Lime & Cement, in the ‘Worker involvement’ category; Aggregate Industries – Concrete Products, for its work on occupational health; and Lafarge Aggregates and Concrete, in the ‘Leadership, training and management’ category.

MPA Special Awards went to Eurovia Roadstone and Hills Quarry Products Ltd (for companies with fewer than 100 employees); and Barr Quarries and Colas Ltd (for companies with 100 to 1000 employees). In addition, 29 individuals were recognised for “going the extra mile” in furthering the cause of health and safety.
The theme of this year’s Health & Safety Conference and Awards was ‘Delivering “Safer by Partnership” and Inspiring Excellence’.

The MPA’s ‘Safer by Partnership’ initiative was introduced earlier this year. It encourages members and their contractors to work more closely together to reduce contractor injuries and incidences of ill health, as part of a wider drive to achieve ‘Zero Harm’.

Sessions also covered progress on the MPA’s contractor charter and its new contractor database, which was launched at the event.

MPA chief executive Nigel Jackson said: “MPA members need to be able to demonstrate contractors’ and sub-contractors’ competence with the same degree of rigour as if the contractors were directly employed.

“It is in recognition of the key role that contractors play in the achievement of ‘Zero Harm’ that we have developed ‘Safer by Partnership’, and will shortly be launching the MPA contractor charter to complement the MPA contractors database, which we have launched today.”
