Now that’s what I call health and safety!

Back in the April issue Tim wrote:

Dear editor,

I‘m the site health and safety advisor for a construction project on an existing electricity sub-station and, during a recent period of heavy rain, when it was too wet to go on site, I took the opportunity to run a fun session on health and safety law – not usually the most light-hearted of subjects!

The basic idea was to inform the site workers about H&S law, and to explain why we do certain things in certain ways on site. The workers were split into groups of five, and they each discussed the relevance of a particular piece of legislation to our site activities.

To keep the interest going, each group was asked to write down any song titles they thought might be relevant to that regulation, there being no right or wrong suggestions. This proved an excellent way of keeping the workers motivated and the result was the pop chart below!

The chart has been displayed on site and has been exceptionally well received by all who have seen it. I recommend other safety advisors to use the idea, as it certainly kept my workers interested and the actual chart gives a view of health and safety legislation from a different – and fun – angle.
