New health and safety director appointed at Crossrail
Martin Brown has been appointed health and safety director for Crossrail Ltd, following the departure of Steve Hails.
Martin Brown was previously head of health, safety and environment at Transport for London (TfL), covering London Overground, DLR, Trams and TfL Corporate, as well as Chair of the Independent Railway Assurance Board for Crossrail.
Martin was also the independent safety expert on the Olympic Delivery Authority Games Transport Safety and Security Committee.
Martin brings with him a wealth of rail knowledge to Crossrail. Prior to joining TfL in 2005, he worked as an executive director at Tube Lines, and was assistant chief inspector of railways at HM Rail Inspectorate.
Crossrail Programme Director Simon Wright said: “The Crossrail programme is approaching 75% per cent complete with major fit-out of the tunnels and stations underway. I’m delighted that Martin Brown has joined Crossrail. Martin’s considerable expertise in rail health and safety will be invaluable as we progress towards the start of dynamic testing in November 2017.”
Steve Hails, previous health and safety director for Crossrail has joined Thames Tideway. Steve joined Crossrail in 2012 and introduced and guided Crossrail through the development of the Health and Safety Performance Index (HSPI), developed the Frontline Leadership Programme and has been a prominent champion for Crossrail’s Target Zero aspirations and health, safety and wellbeing achievements.
Steve joins Crossrail’s former programme director Andy Mitchell, who was appointed CEO of Thames Tideway in 2014.
