New competency certificate launched for mechanical craftsmen

The Engineering Equipment and Materials Users’ Association (EEMUA) has launched a new accreditation for workers who maintain equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres.

The CompEx Unit (Ex 11) competency certification module combines an examination and practical assessment for mechanical craftsmen, which is accredited by UKAS to ISO/IEC 17024. The first course, which was held towards the end of last year at EEMUA’s testing centre in Ellesmere Port, near Liverpool, attracted delegates from companies such as npower, Shell, and RWE.

The Ellesmere Port facility is currently the only CompEx competency validation centre licensed to operate the Ex 11 unit. However, EEMUA plans to develop more centres to enable it to offer the module over the next year.

EEMUA executive director, Clive Tayler, said: “The launch of the CompEx Mechanical Unit extends the scope of CompEx into the key area of ATEX non-electrical working, as well as electrical aspects.”
