Miscellaneous- Wise up on immunisation
Employers keen on ensuring that their employees who travel on business
have quick and efficient access to vaccines and anti-malarial
medication may be interested in a new service from Lloydspharmacy.
Employees travelling on business may not always realise when they are going to a destination that may require them to take additional health precautions. Lloydspharmacy says its Online Doctor service can assist companies by offering quick access to prescribed anti-malarial medicines and vaccines online, eliminating the need for face-to-face consultation with a GP.
Clare Kerr, head of clinical service development at Lloydspharmacy, said: “We know from our research that many people don’t take adequate protection when travelling.
“For instance, we surveyed 1000 people and one in five does not take the recommended precautions when travelling to a malaria hotspot. We also know there has also been a 30-per-cent increase in the deadliest form of malaria in the UK over the past 20 years.”
Provided in conjunction with online facility, DrThom, the new service offers information on what precautions should be taken for specific destinations, and, where appropriate, promises to supply medication next day by Royal Mail Special Delivery. Medicines can also be collected in a Lloydspharmacy branch, where a trained pharmacist also administers the vaccines.
The Online Doctor service involves the customer completing an online questionnaire, which is screened by a DrThom GP. If the customer meets appropriate criteria, a prescription is issued and medication distributed, with advice on how best to take the medication.
Kerr added: “We believe that companies should act responsibly in informing their staff of necessary precautions. Not taking precautions will put individuals’ health at risk and can also present a significant risk to the business as a result.”
