IOSH 2014: preview – what does globalisation mean for health and safety?

Ahead of an exclusive feature in SHP July, we preview the findings from a workshop hosted by the Health and Safety Laboratory.

Dr Jenny Lunt, one of the authors of the article in the forthcoming article, will be speaking on behaviour change at the IOSH conference tomorrow in track D at 14.15 and will be on hand to answer questions about this at the Health & Safety Laboratory’s stand V2400 (near HSE).

In November 2013, the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) ran a global health and safety challenge workshop that brought together human factors experts and health and safety directors from leading multinational companies, including L’Oreal, Diageo, Nestle, Total and Danone at L’Oreal.

The workshop explored potential solutions for tackling contemporary human-factors that relate to health and safety challenges faced by multi-national companies.

The experts identified challenges from a survey of potential participants that considered key issues — the management of workforce transience, cultural diversity and persuading the boss (on health and safety) and how to break unsafe habits.

In an era of rapid globalisation, it is clear that these important areas have yet to be effectively tackled by the health and safety community.

The workshop produced a number of outcomes, which comprised a list of top tips for managing cultural diversity (with an emphasis on differences in national cultures), workforce transience and persuading the boss.

Participants also collated ideas for advanced thinking in tackling unsafe habits that are not covered by an exclusively risk management/preventative approach.

Feedback from the workshop indicated an appetite to run future workshops as way of future proofing health and safety management.
