Innovative excavation tool wins award
An underground mapping solution has won a prestigious health and safety award for its originality.
The Intelligent Trench won the health and safety at work award at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation annual awards ceremony on 15 June. The tool, which is enabled by technology from 3M, Exor, Infotec and Trac-ID, was recognised for being invoative and making noticeable improvements to health and safety during excavations.
It deploys RFID markers during excavations to collect data and photographic evidence about buried apparatus using GPS enabled PDA software. This information is then available free of charge at any time through both a desktop portal or directly to the field via supported devices. This means that any person undertaking future work at the same location will know precisely what lies beneath the soil and pre-warns them of hazards that would otherwise present unexpected risks.
