IIRSM appoints Co-Presidents for first time in history

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) has appointed Co-Presidents to lead and represent its global community of risk and safety professionals.

IIRSM PresidentsRuth Denyer and Callum Irvine took over from outgoing President Clive Johnson at the Institute’s annual general meeting. It is the first time in the 46-year history of the leading risk and safety professional body that two people have shared the role.

Ruth, a IIRSM Trustee and Director, Production Safety, at Netflix, said: “I’m really excited to take on the role of President of IIRSM with Callum. With both of us working side by side we can really support IIRSM in delivering great things and it will bring a depth that simply wouldn’t be possible as one person.

“We’ll be actively focused on the delivery of IIRSM’s core objective of educating and advancing risk management capability through many different routes to continue to scale its impact.

“On a personal note, I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be part of a dual/co-Presidency. This type of flexibility is a great example of a forward-thinking organisation and has given me the opportunity to commit to this level of involvement in the IIRSM.”

Callum, a IIRSM Trustee and also Chair of the Institute’s Emerging Risk Leaders network, said: “I’m delighted to set out on this co-Presidency with Ruth. IIRSM’s past Presidents, and most recently Clive, have helped create a strong platform for the Institute. This platform allows Ruth, me and the wider Council team the breathing space to help our Institute focus on the bigger picture.

“Whilst we bring different perspectives and skills, we’re both champions of smart approaches to risk management, and thinking beyond the conventional – typified by us embarking on a first ever Co-Presidency!”

The VP Global Safety & Security at IHG Hotels & Resorts added: “I’m looking forward to supporting all IIRSM stakeholders in getting the best out of our Institute, including working with Phillip and the management team as IIRSM continues to change gears. There’s a lot to play for, and I’m looking forward to continuing to contribute as IIRSM makes an impact on the world of risk.”

The joint appointment means Ruth and Callum will share chairing duties for IIRSM’s Council, which is responsible for the management and overall strategic direction of the organisation in conjunction with its Chief Executive.

IIRSM CEO Phillip Pearson said: “In Ruth and Callum, we have two talented and accomplished leaders in risk and safety. To appoint Co-Presidents is an unprecedented step for the Institute and we strongly believe it’s the right move as the risk and safety profession becomes increasingly influential in industry.

“They do, of course, have big boots to fill. Clive has been a fabulous President during a very challenging period and we owe him a debt of gratitude for the way he led and represented the profession this past two years.”

UK-based members Phillip Brown, Rosie Russell and John Nelson were appointed Trustees on IIRSM Council at Australia’s AGM in Karla Gahan.
