Health and safety ‘super event’ planned by IOSH and UBM in 2014

The two biggest events in the health and safety calendar are to join forces next year, offering practitioners and product and service providers myriad opportunities to learn, network and inform.

UBM Live, organiser of Safety & Health Expo – Europe’s biggest annual health and safety exhibition – and IOSH have announced today (12 February) that in 2014 the currently NEC-based event will take place alongside the Institution’s flagship annual conference at London ExCeL from 17 to 19 June.

IOSH chief executive Rob Strange OBE said: “Combining the two leading annual events in health and safety will bring the industry together not only to debate and discuss topical issues currently affecting all practitioners but also to provide a space to showcase the latest products and services in the market.”

According to IOSH and UBM, which also publishes SHP, delegates attending the combined event will benefit from the same high-quality content traditionally associated with the leading annual conference, but will now also be able to take advantage of the enhanced learning and networking opportunities presented by Safety & Health Expo and its co-located shows, including Facilities Show, Firex International and IFSEC International.

Adrian Newton, Group portfolio director at UBM Live, commented: “We are delighted to be working again with IOSH to deliver what we feel will be an exceptional event for the industry. Combining Safety & Health Expo with the IOSH Conference in 2014 and hosting this in London allows us to broaden the appeal of the conference to the widest audience and to present a comprehensive offering for the safety and health practitioner.”

Safety & Health Expo is Europe’s leading annual exhibition for the occupational safety and health industry; in 2012 the show attracted a total of 14,675 visitors and welcomed more than 300 exhibitors from a wide range of product areas and disciplines.

These included Oxford-based PPE manufacturer JSP Ltd, whose chief executive, Mark Johnston, said of the new combined event: “We are delighted the world-leading Institution of Occupational Safety and Health is combining its annual conference with the Safety and Health Expo to create a new premier UK event in London at the ExCeL exhibition centre. Movers and shakers in health and safety from both the UK and around the world will want to take part, network and contribute. JSP wholeheartedly supports this very positive move for the British safety industry and we look forward to seeing you at ExCeL in 2014!”

The merger was also welcomed by Honeywell, whose MD of safety products, Stuart Turnbull, described it as “both clear and beneficial for the health and safety community”. He added: “Hosting this inaugural SHE/IOSH exhibition and conference at ExCeL London makes this a compelling event, for which the organiser, UBM, should be congratulated.”

Why relocate a popular, well known show to a location which is more difficult to travel to and further away from the industrial area of the Midlands, to London? The organisers have irritated many loyal exhibitors and visitors by making this decision!
